Fly Like an Eagle Named Elijah

Tuesday Feb 21, 2023

Tuesday Feb 21, 2023

We are back again! Don't mind the silly name--we're just having some fun with two DELICIOUS bourbons: Eagle Rare 10 Year and the Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel. Gotta say: while the Elijah Craig is cheaper and easier to find in many cases (check state listings for your state), we found the Eagle Rare 10 to be worth the hunt in this case. At the end of the day, these two whiskeys may not be competitive in price or availability, and we know this. Sometimes the whiskey tongue wants what it wants, and our selection is fairly vast!

Also, a big phat shout out to Coma-Media for our intro/outro: "Sexy Fashion Beats." You rock! Check him out at Pixabay!

Thanks all (two or three people, tops) who are checking back in with us! We had a long break thanks to the trials and tribulations of chasing the American dream. Thanks to my brother Frank (Kito), we get to try out the Dalmore 12 Sherry Cask Finished scotch, and it really doesn't disappoint! For those that are celebrating: happy Valentine's Day!

Come listen along as Jake and Greg review two entirely new (to them) scotch whiskeys: Old Pulteney 12 and Glenmorangie Nectar D'or... Surprisingly, the award-winner doesn't win our hearts or join our everyday collections.

Jake and Greg finally throw a scotch from Glenlivet into the mix that isn't of a more unique expression (such as the Caribbean Reserve from last week's episode). Full disclosure: this episode might go off the rails at times, but everyone had a great time!

Let's just say the results of this experiment are ...hazy, at best. It's almost unnoticeable that the "guerilla" style of one: Monkey Shoulder Batch 27 shows up. Listen in for a surprising, buzzed treat in this Churchill episode!

Tuesday Feb 15, 2022

Jake and Greg let loose a little and really go to opposite ends of the spectrum, as they pit one of the most expensive Glenfiddich scotches that they've reviewed against one of the cheapest scotches from the Glenlivet: Glenfiddich 21 Rum Cask Reserva versus Glenlivet Caribbean Rum Cask Reserve.

The true question here: does money inherently make scotch whiskey better? Listen and find out (and see if Jake cries about the spend on Glenfiddich 21)!

Tuesday Feb 01, 2022

Thank you all for joining Jake and Greg on this Glenfiddich core lineup review. It has been a wild ride, but all wild and fun things must come to a close. To do it right, Jake and Greg saved the "best" for last (maybe?), with the Glenfiddich 21 Year, "Reserva Rum Cask Finish" expression. Results may vary, and we urge anyone who's got the wallet for this whiskey to let The Smoking Cask know what you think at caskcrew@thesmokingcask.com or Jakec@thesmokingcask.com.
This single malt scotch whiskey is far from the "everyday drinker" price range for most (including these two yahoos) but is certainly something that had to be tried. That said: you may be surprised by the outcome, and The Smoking Cask guys think they may have already identified a champion in the $200-300 range (check local listings, folks)... Is it the Reserva Rum Cask? Listen to find out!

As the Glenfiddich journey nears its end, Jake and Greg are really in for a treat thanks to Glenfiddich's attention to every detail when producing the Glenfiddich 18 single malt scotch, entitled "Our Small Batch." Spoiler alert: this is not a blind for Jake and Greg, as this has always been the celebratory and rare occasion go-to for Jake and has become a fast favorite of Greg's.

This single malt scotch whiskey is not in the "everyday drinker" price range for most but is a must-have for any respectable whiskey collection. Join us again next week to see if Jake and Greg feel the same way about the massively pricey Glenfiddich 21 Reserva Rum Cask, as they finish out the core lineup once and for all.

Tuesday Jan 18, 2022

Jake and Greg continue the tasty journey through the Glenfiddich scotch whiskey expressions with this review of the Glenfiddich 14 Year, Bourbon Barrel Reserve. Subscribe and be on the lookout for our final, upcoming reviews of the Glenfiddich core lineup: Glenfiddich 18 and the Glenfiddich 21.
Glenfiddich 14, Bourbon Barrel Reserve is an excellent scotch for those who have typically favored bourbons, as the aging process takes American oak bourbon barrels and puts them to work, wonderfully. The palate here is really a great amount of sweetness, with a nice, unassuming scotch beginning and a high-end bourbon ending.
Jake and Greg chose to go a different route on formatting this episode. While it's more of a Churchill in length (less of a nubby like last weeks 'interlude' episode), they make an attempt to spice things up by breaking away from the routine, robotic use of the tasting sheet. Give this episode a listen!

A simple nubber episode! Unlike the typical mid-length or Churchill-length episodes, today Jake and Greg take a refreshing break from the norm to do a surprise interlude episode, where they each provide a whiskey that is new and exciting. The results are surprising! Both selections are worlds apart in both cost and expression but guarantee to entertain!

Jake and Greg continue their journey through the Glenfiddich scotch whiskey expressions with this review of the Glenfiddich 15-year Single Malt. Subscribe and be on the lookout for more of the Glenfiddich core lineup: Glenfiddich 14 Bourbon Barrel, Glenfiddich 18 and Glenfiddich 21.
Glenfiddich 15--while a bit more expensive than Glenfiddich 12-- is an excellent choice for anyone who has wet their beak in nice entry-level Highland or Speyside scotch whiskey and is looking to take the next step. A small price increase nets solid improvements in overall flavor and finish, while keeping the palate simple.
